JS: I was answering the question you asked:
How did truth get to be associated with
semantics?
JS: The answer I gave was: blame Charles Morris.
JA: The question was about the relation of truth
to semantics, not about the relation of truth
to logic, which would be almost as idiotic as
your excerpts of SUO messages to the CG list
make all of their authors out to be.
JS: Sorry.
Oh, I am just having a bad day
cause the first deer of autumn
ate the last rose of summer in
my garden.
At any rate, it wasn't blame so much I had in mind,
but a very fuzzy memory from a long time ago that
this is one of those curious things that Peirce
had in common with Frege. I suppose that it
all depends on how and what pieces of their
work you read, but the idea seemed to be
one of treating Truth as an object of
denotation, and all that I meant to
implicate by "notorious" was only
that most folks note that Frege
thought this way but fail to
note that Peirce did too.
I suppose that anything that takes that complex an explanation
would usually be referred to as a "trick" or "loaded" question.
But I was just stalling, anyway ...
