There is no interpretation-free denotation belonging
to the term "The Rightful Reigning Regent of France".
According to one theory of succession the present
Regent of France is Queen Elizabeth II of England.
According to another theory of succession there
is no person who currently possesses this title.
No sign, no mere succession of characters, has the power,
all by itself, in its own right, to determine a referent.
To figure otherwise is to devolve into syntactic animism,
to turn the linguistic turn into a linguistic involution.
