the question of how to bear its unbearable lightness of being,
I will pause from my flight of pragmatic fancy to light for a
moment on the work of many hands that it takes to lift up our
object, the "pragmatic theory of signs" (ptos), and to adjust
its bearing to the larger devoirs that all of us hold so dear.
