SUO: Which Way Is Up?

¤~~~~~~~~~¤~~~~~~~~~¤~~~~~~~~~¤~~~~~~~~~¤~~~~~~~~~¤

S?O Group,

There is a problem that has bothered me from the
very beginning of my association with this group,
but I have never been able to express it yet, at
least, not well enough to dare to speak about it --
and here you had been thinking that I manifested
no compunctions at all about that order of issue --
but something in the air brings it again to mind.
It goes a bit like this:

When we have a latticework for our ontological hierarchy,
then everything is nice, meaning that we know which ways
are up and which ways are down, and even if there exists
some funky sort of Galois connection that inverts orders
on us between a couple of dual moieties, still, there is
no actual confusion overall as to which lattice is which.

But I seem to remember from some courses I took one time
that there are very complex "arithmetic hierarchies" (?)
and subtly entangled "definitional orders" (?), at least,
I believe that they had names a bit like that, where all
of the directions up and down get creased, or folded, or
kneaded so many times over and again that you just can't
tell in any global way anymore which way is up and which
way is down. Of course, there are Peircean rugae that I
could lay out for you that cover this topic, but perhaps
another time. Anyway, I hope that this is enough to jog
somebody's mind who has traversed this material somewhat
more recently.

Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me,

Jon Awbrey
