Jim,
Excel is dead-end technology. I recommend the HTML, XML, format
as a simpler, more standardized way of handling tables.

The advantage of HTML is that the table form is a simple
ASCII file, which can be updated by any HTML tools or even
by typing in the data with a plain ASCII editor. (And for
more complex transformations, you can modify any HTML file
with a program written in Perl, or any other language.)
HTML is vastly simpler, and it will survive even after Microsoft
dumps their current formats for XML (as they are threatening
to do with their .NET strategy).
