SUO: Re: [Fwd: [theory-edge] Speaking to Learn]

From: Jon Awbrey <jawbrey@oakland.edu>

From Arne's post:
" Biosci seems incapable of understanding this relatively simple
explanation of human evolution. There are 3500+ biosci journals with
as many "specialties". The interaction between these is minimal,
since any finding in one are must be recognized and brought to the
attention of others. The systems to do this effectively do not exist.
Unlike Physics, biosci findings are seldom available rapidly and
full-text online. Individual researchers must be subscribed to the
appropriate service in order recieve copies. Non-service articles
will cost upwards of $100 to non-subscribers. It is an incoherant
mess."

I am reminded of some of my own thoughts, to wit:
I am often struck by the notion that it is time to begin mining and cross
referencing all the literature. That cannot be done without some kind of
ontological 'blending' of the many minds represented. Given that I
subscribe to the notion that knowledge is a social construct, I tend to
think that SUO is really about philosophical engineering, bringing far too
many biases to the table. My view is that concepts are not point
attractors, rather they are attractor basins.

My take is that SUO is about implementations. I would much rather see the
effort go toward something like a definition of semantic interoperability,
which does indeed mean a priori definition of a bunch of ontological
entities, but does not specify their implementation. I think that an
appropriate thread would be toward finding a proper serialization scheme
(e.g. OIL) through which heterogeneous implementations of ontologies can
communicate.

Cheers
Jack
