Please note that the whole field of discourse includes not only Top-down vs. Bottom-up  but also Outside-in vs. Inside-out.  Outside-in refers to User or Customer driven. Inside-out refers to technology driven.

Inside out thinking, reminds me of the one meeting I had  with Patricia Seybold, eight or nine years ago, and she was indeed launching a book on the topic, but in relation to marketing rather than Information management
