Re: Developing a standard for an ontology registry/repository

"GEO is a voluntary partnership of governments and international organizations. It provides a framework within which these partners can develop new projects and coordinate their strategies and investments. As of November 2008, GEO's Members include 76 Governments and the European Commission. In addition, 56 intergovernmental, international, and regional organizations with a mandate in Earth observation or related issues have been recognized as Participating Organizations.

GEO is constructing GEOSS on the basis of a 10-Year Implementation Plan for the period 2005 to 2015. The Plan defines a vision statement for GEOSS, its purpose and scope, expected benefits, and the nine "Societal Benefit Areas" of disasters, health, energy, climate, water, weather, ecosystems, agriculture and biodiversity."

Many thanks, Jack. Such a global project has been passing by without knowing. Now one wonders how the GEOSS is progressing with its design and implementations (GEONETcast?). Also, it is engaging how the GEO Science and Technology Committee plans to realize "the globally integrated Earth system science and technology" without having a unifying strategic scheme of research domains and activities: http://www.earthobservations.org/documents/committees/stc/the_role_of_science_and_technology_in_geoss.pdf . But surely, here is a lot of work for the SUO community, if to be reanimated.

John's idea should be pursued post haste.
Staffers and volunteers in the Global Earth Observation System of Systems, http://www.earthobservations.org/geoss.shtml, program are specifying a registry/repository that looks more like Marian The Librarian's card file schema that an ontology. Your first clue to their underconceptualization is the Systems of Systems crutch. The GEOSS registry could benefit from the brainpower and experience of this group.

It's true that most of the debates have moved to ontolog forum,
but unlike ontolog forum, the IEEE is an officially designated
standards body. That is an important advantage.

The original goal of the SUO group was to develop a content
standard for an upper ontology. But the difficulty of reaching
any kind of consensus about content caused people to get
disillusioned.

However, there does seem to be some indication that a consensus
about an ontology registry/repository might be more realistic.
Therefore, we could use the SUO mailing list as a basis for
developing an IEEE standard for a registry/repository.
