Idea: Set up an online testbed
Greetings IEEE Semantic Interoperability COI (formerly SUO WG)
Subscribers,
I'd like to resubmit the idea that we set up an online testbed,
but this time my office can cover the initial server and Technical
Support costs, and post some initial tests and demonstrations. Here are
some starter ideas, but let's discuss further.
Idea: Set up an online testbed
Description: Set of online tools and components that can be analyzed,
tested, and combined by testbed members.
Scope: Semantic Interoperability, data interoperability, ontologies,
upper ontologies, ontology languages, etc.
Purpose: To advance data and semantic interoperability technologies and
build knowledge/expertise of participants.
Resourcing Model:
IEEE volunteer managed governance
Server infrastructure and basic Tech Support paid for by funded
projects from independent organizations
(Free to unfunded projects)
(My organization has some funded projects, so we will
cover this cost to start things off, but this group should select the
best provider)
Premium Tech Support (from server provider) paid for directly by
funded projects
Open-source tools and components contributed by academia and
open-source-oriented vendors
Proprietary tools and components contributed by vendors for
trail-use purposes
Projects independently resourced and managed
Benefits:
Peer review of technology demonstrations
Decomposition of complex capabilities into components.
Allows participants to focus on specific components, and utilize
other components contributed by others.
Allows others to analyze prior tests and demonstrations
Allows participants to improve open-source components and submit
back as improved components
Allows many to focus on key unsolved problems
Allows funding organizations to see consensus on what the
unsolved problems are (which should attract funding)
Enables this open-testbed to collaborate with other
open-testbeds
I'd like to introduce my follow worker, Dan Brennan, who has explored
some providers of server capacity and Tech Support. IEEE would probably
provide free server capacity, but not the Technical Support that funded
projects would need to make rapid progress, so I strongly suggest going
with a vendor specializing in server environments. Dan will provide his
findings on available vendors, but the selection should be by this
group, not by us. (In parallel, we could set up another site with IEEE,
if anyone else wants to explore this.)
Thoughts anyone?
