Although marginally qualified I volunteer to lead P4, "A technology-free
upper ontology."
The intent of this project is to ensure that presumptions about
implementation technology do not constrain or compromise the way
ontologies are structured.
It is assumed that most all ontologies will manifest as webs (including
lattices) of terms. It is noticed that the stored program computer is
inconsistent with such topology because interim results must be stored
and then resolved. Even if one presumes multi-computer grids the speed
and cost limits are intolerable for all but laboratory-scale
applications. This fundamental incompatibility between the attributes
of the problem and the capabilities of the tool has compromised ontology
design but should not compromise future conceptions and designs of
ontologies. Likewise interoperability investigations generally presume
relational type data management systems while a real-world application
may require upwards of millions of joins per second.
Software and hardware products for full-duplex semantic network data
management exist or are nearing realization, c.f. www.numenta.com,
www.InsightQ.com, www.kennentech.com, etc. These capabilities can be
applied to navigating web structures at speeds equivalent to 3600
current microprocessors on a grid at a production cost of about $100 per
chip.
I foresee P4 interrelating with D1, D4, D6, D7, D8, D9 and P3, P7 and
P8.
I will encourage participation by the data flow and Xputer community.
Part of this IEEE Interest Group should be preparing for the future.
The future is arriving faster than we think, literally.
Co-leaders are welcome.
