Re: Brainstorming Session: Technology/Culture-driven "Thirdness" Practice
Jim,
I think that there is the need/opportunity for a
*Technology/Culture-driven "Thirdness" Practice*
(to use C.S. Peirce's category).
In fact cultures (including the anthropological modification of the
"natural" ambit and the territory) appear often to drive intuitions and
to influence abductions, and how "commons" (including knowledge
representation systems) contribute to personal understanding.
In other words the proposal is to focus on Pragmatics, and not only on
Semantic, to identify good practice in using "commons" and knowledge
representation system as an Agency, in front of what sometimes can not
be described, but that appears to have nevertheless some influence on
understanding, (including "material signs" as physical objects and
buildings because of new information embedding possibilities).
As a very basic example of what I mean a few months ago I delivered (at
the Collegio Nuovo - in Pavia - Italy http://colnuovo.unipv.it ) a
seminar named "Winning Hearts & Minds through Cultural and Technological
Commons". The title speaks for itself and a short description of the aim
of the seminar in English with a bibliography is available on my course
page - look for CDMA's materials at the Collegio web site).
Actually this is more than a proposal for this Community. I have planned
to evaluate a few cases about the interdependence of intuition and
analytic thinking, particularly stressed by Oriental Cultures,
leveraging on the Agency of Milanese Arts, Crafts, Fashion and the likes
through a so called "Natural-Artificial Beauty" program (La Bellezza
Naturale Artificiale come Agenzia), with a few Artist friends in Milan
-Italy (as done in the past with a seminar called Art & Techné for Pavia
University).
A "primer" in Italian for Italians is now available at
http://colnuovo.unipv.it/matdida/Bellezza-naturale-artificiale.pdf
.
But the issue is global. To understand how it is relevant the Agency of
the Natural-Artificial Beauty "Thirdness" in defining a background
Eastern-Western global culture perhaps one case is sufficient: 14 works
made with gunpowder and ink, the abstract "Set for the Asia-Pacific
Economic Cooperation", made by a Chinese-born artist living mainly in
New York, Cai Guo-Qiang, was sold for *US$9.5 million* in Hong Kong last
week (accordingly to the Wall Street Journal - November 27th - page 29).
I hope to spend sometimes in the Asia-Pacific region ASAP, but something
of similar applies in my opinion to more mundane "Commons" everywhere,
defining their value for the people, including knowledge representation
systems usability.
