If ontologies are ever going to become practical for
real-world applications, much more research must be
devoted to automated and semiautomated methods for
developing, testing, aligning, tailoring, extending,
and adapting ontologies. We can't expect highly trained
Cyc personnel to be available whenever anybody wants to
use an off-the-shelf ontology for their application.
There is a lot of similarity between the methods needed
to tailor, adapt, extend, or test an existing ontology
and the methods used in learning new ontologies.
Therefore, I would recommend those two papers for the
bibliography that Cathy Legg is putting together.
