Re: Demonstrating Hierarchy of Ontologies

Jim,

Such R & D is essential:

Most of what's happening is random people creating random
hierarchies with not even much, if any, anecdotal evidence
about their organization, their theoretical foundations,
and their relationships to one another or to reality.

Cyc is the biggest of all ontologies, and the 2003 DARPA
sponsored review of Cyc recommended that the most important
task was to document that enormous elephant so that people
could get some idea of what is there, how it works, what
it's good for, and where we should go from there.

Unless we have such documentation, all we can say about
any ontology is that it's somebody's best guess. That is
not a solid foundation for a standard.
