There is an article in Technology Review's web site
on Mitsuo Kawato's project to build a robot as a way
of learning how the brain functions.  It includes three
pages of descriptive text and a photo gallery of the
robot he is using.

He also seems to be using MRI scans to validate his
guesses on how the brain performs similar tasks.

Kawato is lobbying for a 30 year project at $500M
per year to build a robot with the capabilities of a
five year old child.  Sounds a bit unfundable, but the
Japanese seem to have the patience for these very
large long term projects, so who knows.
