Dear AAAI Executive Councilors and Fellows,
Tim Finin, our CRA Liaison, asked me to send this message to you.

NSF's budget is under assault -- at a time when the future
of our profession and economy need greatly increased funding
for computing research. The CRA Government Affairs
Committee [1] is asking US researchers to write to their
congressional representatives in support of increasing NSF's
budget. Please consider writing your Senators and
Representative as soon as possible and by September 7, when
Congress reconvenes, if possible.
CRA's Peter Harsha has assembled a concise analysis of the
situation along with a letter template [2] that you can use
to send to your Senators and Congressman. The template
letter marks places needing personalization in red and can
modified or extended as you see fit. Fax the letters,
rather than mailing hardcopy (avoiding delays due to
anthrax-related problems) using the numbers for your
Senators and Representative on [2]. Please send Peter
a copy of your correspondence for his records by email
(harsha@cra.org) or fax (202-667-1066).
As a senior researcher, you play a key role in making the
case for increased federal funding for basic research, which
is so crucial for our field and our country. You might also
consider joining the Computing Research Advocacy Network
(CRAN) [3] and take part in this and future advocacy
projects.
