                           CALL FOR PAPERS
                   Second International Workshop on
                PHILOSOPHY AND INFORMATICS (WSPI 2005)

              April 10-13, 2005, Kaiserslautern (Germany)
              http://wm2005.iese.fhg.de/workshop15-en.html

             Paper submission deadline: September 3rd, 2004

The Second International Workshop on Philosophy and Informatics is
organized by the Special Interest Group "Philosophy and Informatics" of
the German Informatics Society (Arbeitskreis "Philosophie und
Informatik"
der Gesellschaft für Informatik GI). You can find out more about the
SIG here: http://www.nt.fh-koeln.de/philosophyandinformatics/.

GOAL AND AIMS

The workshop encourages the trans-disciplinary discourse on
philosophical
foundations of Informatics, especially regarding the foundations of
Artificial Intelligence. The major goal of the workshop is to bring
researchers, scientists from both philosophy and informatics, and
representatives from different communities together to study,
understand,
and explore philosophical points of view and points of view in
informatics
in order to develop an interface between both disciplines. Steps to
build
a common vocabulary of philosophers and computer scientists should be
taken.
As a result, a common understanding on some of the topics mentioned
below
shall originate.

Besides paper presentations, this workshop offers organized and open
spaces
for targeted discussions. It aims at offering a forum for the
presentation
and discussion of new directions and interesting work in progress.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

In general, scientists from Philosophy, Informatics (Computer Science)
or
from related subjects with interest in a trans-disciplinary discourse on
foundations of Artificial Intelligence. The workshop is the annual
meeting
platform of the members of the SIG "Philosophy and Informatics".

WORKSHOP LANGUAGE

Submission languages are English (preferred) and German. The workshop
will
be held in English.

TOPICS

We are looking for contributions that propose new approaches or identify
conceptual problems addressing one or more of the following aspects:

   * Relations between ontologies as a concept of Artificial Intelligence
     and ontology as a philosophical discipline
   * Epistemology and ontologies, ontologies and taxonomy
   * Translation of ontologies
   * The paradigm of domains: Problems of isolation (frame problem),
     transfer problem ("Eigengesetzlichkeit" of domains), problems of
     adaptation of logic (modal logic)
   * Thinking ("Denken") vs. knowledge ("Wissen"), process vs. result:
     associative vs. structural thinking; phenomenology, tacit or
implicit
     knowledge
   * Philosophical contributions to knowledge representation
   * Semantics and knowledge representation
   * Explanation and understanding
   * Evaluation of knowledge: qualitative and quantitative aspects
   * Individualization of knowledge
   * Hierarchies of knowledge
   * Knowledge in software (Question of reliability of programs,
     knowledge, etc.)
   * Philosophical aspects of knowledge management
   * Philosophical aspects of context in informatics
   * Realistic vs. idealistic modes of evaluation of ontology/ies-based
     applications in informatics

SUBMISSIONS

This workshop solicits full research papers. Full papers (max. 8 pages)
discuss innovative problems from one of the areas sketched above.

Formatting

Authors are strongly encouraged to use LaTeX and the Springer llncs
class files available at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html.
While the pages in the final camera-ready form of a paper must be
unnumbered (this is the default in llncs style), numbered pages are
preferred for reviewing. Page numbering can be turned on using the LaTeX
command \pagestyle{plain}.

Please, mail a PDF version of your paper to
mailto:wspi2005@dfki.uni-kl.de.
Do not hesitate to contact us for further questions.

Workshop proceedings

It is intended to publish all accepted workshop contributions in a
joined conference proceedings volume within the series Lecture Notes
in Computer Science of Springer.

Review process

All submissions will be subject to review by the WSPI Program Committee.
The workshop organizers have final authority over the review process and
all decisions relating to acceptance of papers. Review criteria include
originality of ideas, technical soundness, significance of results, and
quality of presentation. It is intended to have three reviews per
submission. Notification of acceptance or rejection of submitted papers
will be mailed to the corresponding author.

IMPORTANT DATES

   Submission deadline: September 3, 2004
   Notification of acceptance: October 11, 2004
