I once was solidly behind McCain. I think he is very
bright, a confirmed hero, and one of the very few, very
good politicians.
However, when the US got involved in Bosnia, he came out
with a very hawkish stand. He disagreed with Clinton's
plan to use stand-off technology (precision munitions,
cruise missiles, recon technologies, ...) and instead
came out fully for putting American soldiers on the ground
there. His emotional response was atypical of him, and
probably due to the trauma he suffered in Viet Nam as
a POW. Nevertheless, I don't want a president who is a
hawk. Its bad enough that we're still in Bosnia, and have
gotten into Afghanistan and Iraq since then. I can be
persuaded about Afghanistan, and NATO is doing most of the
on-site work in Bosnia, but I'm very ambivalent about our
plan for Iraq. I don't want any more forces on the ground
anywhere until we bring some of those back.
That's why I lost faith in McCain, though he is still high
on my list for other reasons.
