SUO: Topic :> Definition Of Complaint

Topic :> Complaint.           <JA, 08 Dec 2003, 08>

o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o

1.  What's complaint?

2.  What ain't?

3.  What's compliant?

4.  What ain't?

5.  What's the same?

6.  What's the diff?

7.  Who cares?

8.  No, really, who?

9. For whom it may concern about the difference, if such be:
    Is it a syntactic, a semantic, or a pragmatic diffidence?

...................................................

Example (QV) -- Not!

Consider the following (3 + x)-fold transaction:

JA = Jon Awbrey
JS = John Sowa
MW = Matthew West

JA, to MW:

    There are now eight (8) messages from you
    in my mailbox, and it is only 10:30 AM here.

JS, to JA, MW, and the SUO List:

    Jon's complaint is typical of most of us, and it
    is an excellent reason for moving the procedures
    discussion to the other list.

JS: I suggest that it be moved this week.

Strictly speaking -- and we are all gonna be real, real strict
in the immolant future -- the text of JA that JS quotes is not
a complaint but a compound observation of a number and a time.

| These are the forms of time,
| which imitates eternity and
| revolves according to a law
| of number.
|
| Plato, "Timaeus", 38 A,
| Benjamin Jowett (trans.)

This is typical of the sorts of mistakes
that people make when they do not observe
the Pragmatic Maxim, or failing cognizance
of that Obscure Liturgy, any other discipline --
and we're all gonna get real, real disciplined
in the immordant future -- that repects the due
use of practical definitions in -- GOL Forbid! --
Real Practice.

JS frequently makes these types of mustakes because
of the careless scholarship, distorted communication,
not to mention the lack of consideration for the actual
intentions of other authors, living, legendary, and lost,
that inheres in the practice of quoting radically reductive
fragments of their extant texts, very often quoted out of all
due cognizance for their meanings in the lives of said authors.

Now, that's an Example of a Complaint.

Or wait!? Maybe it's only an Example of a Criticism (QV In Futuro).

Bottom's Line:

"You just can't tell the Winers from the Sommeliers without a Programme."
