As it arose in our present discussions, the topic of Comprehension
first appeared in the context of defining an Example, in particular,
a case under a Definition. This is the usage that I documented here:

In part:
JA: What is an example, in particular,
a case falling under a definition?
JA: In your second answer to the
question "What is an example",
you supplied the following text:
MW: Under a definition an example is some informative material
(as opposed to normative material) that aids comprehension
of the definition.
This puzzled me at first, due to an evident confusion between
things that are serving in the role of "signs", for example,
the informative material, and things that are the "objects"
of these signs, for example, the Example in question, that
the informative material is ostensibly informative about.
But I eventually found a way to read your statement that
made sense to me by my own lights, and that is just to
interpret it as saying that being informed about the
Example (object) by the informative material (sign)
provides us also with information that helps us to
comprehend the Definition.
I realize, now, that it's being just a little picky,
but is that a fair interpretation of what you meant?
