Matthew,
The SUO Archive is falling behind our pace,
or missing on some cylinders of its engine
entiredly, but I will quote your last note
on this sub-subject in full, so as to keep
some more persistent log of it.
JA: SUOPT :> EXG Page 2. http://suo.ieee.org/email/msg11654.html
MW: Well OED has:
OED: | Example. Typical instance; a fact, incident,
| quotation, etc. that illustrates, or forms a
| particular case of, a general principle, rule,
| state of things, etc.
MW: Which will do me, though I might
add that a good list of examples
will include marginal as well as
prototypical instances.
Yes, this may be as good as it gets when it comes
the spadework on such archeo-logical fundamentals,
though of course no one could help observing that
all of the operational and substantive terms that
are invoked in this definition are no better than
a bunch of synonyms and noun2verb transformations,
for example, Case, Illustration, Instance, etc.
So I think that we are still obliged to dig a little further,
if not deeper, then horizontally, and ask why it should work
on behalf of Definition to provide a few collateral Examples.
