Let me tell you what I had in mind by raising this topic.
It was not meant to start another one of those recursive,
diverting, consummately frivolous navel engagements that
unpragmatic axiomatics is so susceptible of devolving to.
My father, who served as an Army Airborne Paratrooper in the Pacific
during World War 2, is fond of the maxim "to hit the ground running".
What I have in mind here is the sort of Rough & Ready, "Rarin' To Go"
was their motto, definitions that we can hit the ground and run with.
And yet these definitions must bear no baggage that impedes a steady
progress toward more formal engagements and hopes of winning a Truth.
That is to say, I am suggesting that we make our first approximation
to the definition of each fundamental concept and term by way of the
same sort of stepwise refinement cracking process that best practice
dictates for clarifying our principles and developing our procedures.
Accordingly, I would start painting the Town Of Philosophy with very
broad definitions, in very rough strokes, beginning with the sprayer,
working my way down to the lamb's wool roller, the 3-inch brush, the
half-inch brush, and most finely, a camel hair paintbrush if need be.
But let us not get ahead of ourselves,
and not paint ourselves into a corner.
