LIS. Discussion Note 18

o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o

And just because it's Friday ...

Since we are currently operating on the assumption that
the Starship Enterprise <insert model number here ____>
is a possible_individual, I will absorb the definitive
corpus of statements so far written about that subject,
as it exists in space and time, taking it as the basis
for the ontology of the Starship Enterprise, and leave
it to some other, far more dedicated Trekkie to do the
consistency checks on that theory. Be that as it may,
consider the story of V'ger, an embedded intelligence,
that pearlesced about the core of its intitial memory
an inquiry driven system of quite literally galactic,
if perhaps a bit nebulous proportions.

Taking that as inspiration, turn with me now to the thrilling days of the
24th Century, when SUO 0.1 is finally released, and burned into the flint
chips of a "persistently extensible intelligent research command element" --
you do the acronym -- that forms the nerve, swerve, and verve of V'ger 9K.

Then let us be clear about the following things:

The real world has properties that we and V'ger our agent need to know about,
and the things that exist in the real world, including us and by hypothesis
V'ger our agent are involved in orders of relations that we and V'ger our
agent need to know about. The Question is: How can we and V'ger our
agent come to represent a sufficient number of these properties and
relations in the spirally convoluted medium of signs that wraps
itself around and about our prime igniting irritant of doubt?

Ground Control to Major Tom ...

Over and out ...
