SUO: RE: Ballot may be released Friday (a plea for clarification)
Wrt resolution #2:
I like its inclusiveness in that it attempts to pull together valuable
efforts. But I think the wording needs to be more clear to the effect
that it isn't intended to foster the accommodation and juxtaposition of
competing mutually inconsistent ontologies (as the end product).
My experience with trying to pick and choose axioms from different
independently authored unreconciled corners of Ontolingua suggests that
one very likely needs to reconcile bodies of axioms before using them
together. Or lacking resources, one needs to "pick a religion (OpenCyc
or SUMO)", reform what is offensive, and convert and baptize any other
axioms that are needed. These other axioms should, of course, be sought
initially from the other religion.
But I would certainly support resolution #2 with an additional point
stating that the goal of the effort would be to create a third content
ontology (which could be composed of multiple theories which would be
tied together in IFF fashion) which would be a merge of OpenCyc and
SUMO. That third ontology would also be the SUO.
