Re: SUO: OpenCyc Released - concepts/assertions?
Jim,
From <http://www.opencyc.org/doc/> (to where one's browser is redirected
by opening the file ".../doc/toc.html" that is included with the release):
"Supported Platforms. The beta versions of OpenCyc currently support Linux
only. Red Hat and Mandrake have been confirmed as working. Others may or
may not work at this time. We'll update the list when we get more feedback
about what works. Version 1.0 of OpenCyc will also support Windows NT. No
other platform support is planned at this time."
Now, I'm no proponent of proprietary operating systems, but to support only
Linux, and then only x86-based Linux, is extremely limiting if you want
people to actually use your software. Given that it's written in Java, this
restriction is even less justifiable. To top it off by saying that support
is only planned for these platforms plus Windows is quite disappointing.
Mac OS X should be included, too, as should non-Intel Linux platforms.
Portability and platform-neutrality are Java's big advantages, after all.
And Mac OS X is the only commercial operating system with Java support in
the base OS, not requiring a separate acquisition and installation.
Too bad so many people are going to be excluded from evaluating this
software in action.
