 Call for paper

Ontoweb/ECAI-02 Workshop on Ontologies and Semantic
 Interoperability

 see http://www.cs.vu.nl/~heiner/ECAI-02-WS

 22-23 Jul 2002, Lyon, France

 Topics of Interest

We especially encourage papers concerned with the problem of
 achieving interoperability between terminologies, systems,
different conceptualizations and ontology languages. Papers
that try propose a useful terminology and classification of
semantic mismatch and interoperability are most welcome.

 Interoperability of Terminologies:
Many standardized terminologies exist in different
 disciplines and
application areas like e-Business or geographical
 information processing.
Most of these standards suffer from the problem that
 they are incompatible
to each other. Formal ontologies can help to integrate
 these terminologies
or to find mappings between them.

 Interoperability of systems:
In order to exchange information between different
 information systems or
applications in general, one has to assure that the
 information is
interpreted in way it was originally intended. An
 excellent example is the
area of Multi-Agent systems, where Agents that might
 use different
terminologies have to cooperate. Again, ontologies are
 a way to explicate
the intended meaning of information and provide
 interoperability. While the
main problems are similar to the previous point, in
 systems
interoperability additional questions related to the
 integration
architecture and run-time processing of semantic
 information arise.

Although Ontologies provide solutions for some problems of
semantic interoperability, they suffer from heterogeneity
 themselves. Therefore, the interoperability between
different ontologies is also an important aspect.

Harmonisation of different conceptual modelling choices:
There are always many ways to model a domain of
 discourse. Often the
distinction between classes and individual or classes
 and relation it is not
       clear. Different conceptualizations may stress
 different aspects of a
       domain.

 Integration of ontology languages
A number of languages for representing ontologies have
 been proposed. They
do not only differ in the expressiveness, but also in
 level of formality and
theroretical foundation. Therefore, the integration of
 ontologies encoded in
different languages is a difficult problem

We invite proposals for new techniques for ontology
integration and merging as well as analyses of existing
techniques. Among the techniques that have been put forth:
 articulation ontologies, conceptual anchoring, graph
homomorphisms, microtheories and the formalization of
context, the notion of "little theories" and theory
 interpretation, and category theoretic methods.

For the special problem of assuring interoperability when
transforming knowledge models we refer to the ECAI-02
Workshop on Knowledge Transformation for the Semantic Web. A
joint session with this workshop will be held if
 appropriate.

We invite contributions of different kinds. Besides regular
research papers, system presentations and presentations of
ontologies related to the topic of the workshop are welcome.
Research papers should be formatted according to the
official formatting guidelines of the ECAI main conference
not exceeding ten pages. System descriptions and ontologies
should be described in a document also formatted according
to the ECAI guidelines and not exceeding five pages. The
papers should clarify the application area and major design
decisions. A PDF version of all papers should be made
accessible on the web. The URL of the
paper should be mailed to the main contact (see below). In
the case of contributions of ontologies, the model itself
has to be made accessible on the web. The submission
proceedure will be carried out along the following dates:

March 22th: Deadline for Submissions (NEW !!)
       April 20th: Notification of Acceptance
       May 20th: Camera-Ready Copies
       June 6th: Workshop Proceedings Due
