Everybody here is dedicated, in one way or another,
to the success of this project. That does not mean
that they will agree or even understand each other
very much at this still quite early point in time.
Many of the things that you are saying are things
that many of us have said many times, as you will
find if you spend more time lost in the funhouse
of the archives. The first time that somebody
here insulted my intelligence, my integrity,
and my intentions in the forum, I got very
upset and behaved hysterically, allowing
it to generate warps in the pattern of
my communication. It all seems a bit
comical now -- well, anyway, most of
the time -- but it was intensely
painful at the time, and so,
like the song-wreaker said:
| Well, I've been where you're hanging,
| I think I can see how you're pinned.
Then again, maybe not.
I have since gradually, all too gradually come to comprehend
that everybody speaks from their point of view, and that the
people who say things that would upset us, if we let it, are
merely saying what they, given their present knowledge base,
can hardly help but to think.
As I said to you about your present set of contributions:
JA: It is not my place to tell others what to essay or what to envoi.
Just at first sight, and in terms of what interests me personally,
your posting appears to be succinct and informative about the state
of knowledge in FCA and Hillman's ideas and it will make it easier
for me to look into them further, so I welcome that contribution.
But, still, my present provisional impression is that I have been
familiar with the general tenor of these ideas for 20+ years, and
so it is a higher priority for me at present to continue digging
this Lost Dutchman's Mine to which Peirce has given us the map.
JA: If you consider semiotics to be straying, then that is your entitled opinion,
but I have reasons to think, reasons with which even Plato and Aristotle were
thoroughly familiar, that our sorts of beings cannot get at ontos+logos except
through the door of logos first.
JA: So that will be my approach to the subject.
That is still my considered opinion.
So my advice -- it is my turn now, as you gave me lots of it off-list --
is that you slow down and take it easy. We are not going to work out
these problems, onto.logo.politico.semio.whatever, this year or next,
and many of us have a clue or two just what a long haul we're in for,
because we've already been in for it for a long haul already.
