I recommend that we use the spelling "artifact".

Most dictionaries list both "artifact" and "artefact" as
acceptable alternatives.  The Latin word "ars" has the genitive
form "artis" with root "arti-".  Therefore, "artifact" would be
the more natural spelling.

And the clincher is that "artifact" is the more commonly used form.
Google found 597,000 occurrences of "artifact", but only 108,000
occurrences of "artefact".
