SUO: Vote on IFF
On the question:
"Should the IEEE P1600.1 Standard Upper Ontology Working Group commence
work on the IFF Foundation Ontology version 1.0 [July 20, 2001] posted
at http://suo.ieee.org/Kent-IFF.pdf <http://suo.ieee.org/Kent-IFF.pdf> ,
with the intent of developing it into the final SUO document?
I vote YES.
It seems odd that I should vote to elevate for consideration something I
do not yet quite understand when I voted no on something I understood
too well. Neither proposal is suitable by itself and our considering
both may just further the divide evident in the list communication. I
am heartened by Adam's efforts to consider input and discouraged by the
rigidity now imposed on revisions to SUMO. I understand his need for
some form of recognition toward the effort so far.
I've been working my way through the Kent-IFF paper and while many of
the concepts are not new, the terminology sure is. It is the
recognition of some familiar structuring concepts that offers
encouragement regarding a formal basis for SUO and hence my support.
Now I stand on the tight wire twixt the monolithic SUMO and the IFF
trunk of category theory, awestruck at the chasm around me. Which way
do I go? While I can not build a bridge from the middle to each
extreme, I can ask that each extend toward the other to ease my journey.
I expect to cross this bridge many times with a host of others.
Cheers,
Richard A. Martin
