SUO: Aggregation of Monadic Aretes

John, Josiane, and All, ...

Your latest notes collide in my mind's ears to raise
a not unpleasant cacophony of resonances with themes
that I have strained to bring into better attunement
throughout my whole so-called career -- but then, my
taste in music always did run to all of the extremes
atonce.

John's concord on a note of semeiotic is about as much harmony
as anyone could wish to hear hereabouts, so I am tempted, but
not really tempered, to quit while I am ahead on this score,
but in the peace of this near-resolution I am reminded of
the reason why Peirce amplified, cleaned up, echoed, and
sharpened up this instrument of ancient, byzantine, and
classical musement, placing this inquiry-into-signs in
concert with his novel arrangements, transpositions,
and variations on another neglected theme, the yet
to be fully developed "Logic of Relations" (LOR).
To wit, both of these two movements were engaged
all the more acutely to address the long-hailed
and much-fanfared "Logic of Science" (LOS).

And that resonates in my mind with Josiane's note
of a few days ago, that has been reverberating in
my head all the while, if a bit diminuendo, still,
not yet dying away in the silence that has so far
accompanied it. What I would have replied, if it
were my cue, is that she has unsuspectingly aired
two motives that are anathema to the garden party
"cognitive and computational ontologists" (CACO's)
on today's programme, namely, the avowed interest
in empirical data, in collaboration with the very
idea of wondering how and whence and wherefore we
arrive at our axiomatic conceits, poetic and else,
in the first place, as they say, which is, if you
reflect on it, never truly the first place at all.

And now, on a much more melodious note, there arises in my mind
the pleasant anamnesis of how I first began, however inchoately,
to take up this jumble and rumble of themes, not really attuned
to all of their concords and discords at my first sight reading,
as I sat down to play at my brand new instrument, the TI 99-4A;
excuse me while I nostalgicize.

Years pass ...

What arose from this evolution was the following awareness:
that the divergent tendencies in the human spirit, even if
they dispose what appears on the surface to constitute the
same human soul, that incline on the one branch toward the
givens of experience, the data of the senses, and such ilk,
and that retrorse on the other branch toward the whole set
of concepts, ideas, or notions with which the intellectual
side of our nature blooms so abundantly, often in the lack
of any edible fruits being harvested therefrom, that these
twin spirits do not rest so easy together, even especially
if they reside in the same human frame. Accordingly, then,
for the meantime, at least, I can summarize my whole theme
by pointing to the problem of reconciling these two chords:
Empiricism and Rationalism, and that I will take up, again.

Jon Awbrey
