SUO: A web-based SUO Glossary - Copyright question
Parallel to this message, invitations have been sent to the SUO mailing
list, inviting readers to contribute and collaborate in developing
definitions for the SUO Glossary. (I wanted to go ahead and get the
infrastructure in place to support this.)
However, at least one important detail needs to be resolved regarding this
effort, namely the issue of copyright and acknowledgments for any
definitions that are contributed.
Pending resolution of this question, I recommend that readers delay actually
submitting definitions. On the other hand, please go ahead and accept the
invitation and register with Quickbase so that you can contribute
definitions once the copyright question is resolved.
One option would be for individuals who contribute a definition to include
an appropriate copyright statement on their own behalf for their definition,
along with appropriate acknowledgments to works of others, and for IEEE to
provide an appropriate umbrella copyright statement which can apply to the
entire assembly of definitions that will be collected at the website.
However, this is just one option -- the matter should be discussed and
agreed among the group before proceeding, of course. Jim, please let us know
what approach you recommend, relative to copyrights.
