SUO: semiotics formalization
Folks,
Here's an attempt to sketch some terms to support semiotics. I have
intentionally not looked at the Cyc public upper ontology in creating
this. A cross check with that material would be a good idea as a next step.
(comment Information "A class of abstract, non-physical things, which are
object-like (rather than stuff-like) and atemporal. Important subclasses
include numbers and mathematical theories. Since any string of characters
can be represented as a number, and numbers are atemporal, then in an
abstract sense, all the world's novels have always existed, just have not
been committed to paper or human perception.")
(comment coding-of "(codingOf ?CODE ?INFO) indicates that ?CODE is a
representation of ?INFO. Examples include a musical score being a coding
of a musical idea and English characters being a coding of English speech.")
(comment realization-of "(realizationOf ?EXP ?IDEA) means that ?EXP is the
temporal and tangible expression of the information contained in
?IDEA. Examples include a physical book realizing the information of a
story or a printed musical score which embodies the information of the
notes in a musical work.")
(comment interpretation "(interpretationOf ?INT ?SPEC) means that ?INT is a
concrete set of choices that fit within a specification ?SPEC. Examples
include a particular musical performance being an interpretation of the
specification given by a musical score, or a reading of a poem as a
concrete interpretation of a written poem.")
(comment Specification "A subclass of Information which covers things like
architectural blueprints, software architectures, or musical
scores. Specifications are intended to guide the realization of an
idea. They are only intended to cover some significant percentage of the
choices open to the agent constructing the artifact intended by the
specification.")
