SUO,
Re: Comment #8 'Upper?'
In my laudable but probably hopeless efforts to catch up on
my homework for this group, I have tried to trace the history
of attributions concerning the meaning of the term "upper".
As often happens, I found myself being driven further and
further back into the dim mists of history, but here is
what I have so far.
Note: I am using the "chicken-scratch" operator "-<-"
to record the variety of attributions and considerations
that each interpreter contemplated at a given time, without
necessarily saying what any of them committed to, decided on,
or settled upon in the end. If you want a more dignified name
for this deliberately vague relationship, you can call it a mark
of the target concept's "pedigree" -- this is just Medieval French
for "crane's foot", I gather, but evidently a more respectable bird,
for some.
In reviewing this account, I notice at least one critical problem
that seems to be emerging, crucially affecting different people's
ability to understand one another. Namely, when it comes to the
correspondence or the duality between extensional and intensional
lattices, there needs to be some clarification as to which side
of this mirror, exactly, a given interpreter is residing on.
For example, Nicola Guarino says he is promoting a "union"
of "generic" and "meta" to crown the concept of "upper",
and several others subsequently say that they agree,
but substitute the term "combination" for "union".
I think everybody understands what's at issue here,
but I believe that it needs to be specified precisely.
Any additions and corrections that anybody wants to make
to this provisional account will be greatly appreciated.
