Re: SUO: Re: Spatial Standardization

The following conference may be of interest regarding spatial
standardization issues:

*** Geographical Domain and Geographical Information Systems ***
EuroConference on Ontology and Epistemology for Spatial Data Standards

La Londe-les Maures, France, 22-27 September 2000
(see also http://www.geoinfo.tuwien.ac.at/events/Euresco2000/gdgis.htm)

Scope
=====
The conference will focus on bridging the gap between research in ontology
and epistemology of spatially extended objects on the one hand, and research
in representational models of spatial phenomena on the other. The
interrelation between knowledge and formal representation is still an open
question for research, especially for uncertain knowledge. In the absence of
a formal theory, we are in a situation where system designers produce ad hoc
treatments of uncertainty. Standardisation is necessary, but premature.
Ontology and epistemology of spatially extended objects can provide a basis
for the development of formal models of spatial uncertainty. The conference
will deal with
* ontology of space
* epistemology of space
* spatial cognition
* spatial uncertainty
* spatial hierarchies
* spatial generalization
* norms and standardisation
and related topics.

The conference is open to researchers world-wide, whether from industry or
academia. Participation will be limited to 100. The emphasis will be on
discussion about new developments. The Conference Fee covers registration,
full board and lodging. Grants will be available, in particular for
nationals from EU or Associated States under 35.
